UCC Prefixes
UCC-12 identification
numbers printed under a UPC-A Symbol can start with any prefix digit from 0-9. UCC numbers that begin with 0, 3, 6, 7, and 8 have been assigned by the
Uniform Code Council (UCC) and are currently widely used around the world to identify
trade items. UCC-12 identification numbers, when stored in a 13-digit database, are
prefaced with a leading zero before storage. If stored in a 14-digit database, the UCC-12
numbers are prefaced with two leading zeros before storage. The following table displays
the different coding structures within a 14-digit database:

Note: The leading zeros are
never displayed on consumer products that are marked with an EAN-13, EAN-8, or UPC-A symbol.
To visually recognise a UCC-12 identification number in a UPC-A bar code
symbol, one should count the digits. UPC-A is 12 digits in length, while EAN is 13 digits. In
addition, the EAN-13 symbol starts and finishes with two bars slightly longer than the rest (the Guard
Bars).
The UPC-A symbol has four bars slightly longer, the Guard Bars and the first
and last character.
